What Colorado law requires when the traction law goes active, what happens to your ride when I-70 closes, and why we do not cancel on weather.
The rule that governs every winter drive to the mountains
Most people booking a winter ride to Vail or Breckenridge have never heard of the traction law until they are stopped by it. It is the single most important thing to understand about Colorado winter driving.
The Passenger Vehicle Traction Law is activated by CDOT during winter storms and can be applied to any state highway. On I-70 between Dotsero (milepost 133) and Morrison (milepost 259) it runs from September 1 through May 31 whenever conditions call for it. Under it, a vehicle needs all-wheel or four-wheel drive with mud-and-snow or mountain-snowflake rated tires at 3/16-inch tread depth, an all-weather rating from the manufacturer at that same tread depth, or chains or an approved alternative traction device.
The Passenger Vehicle Chain Law is the escalation, and the last step before CDOT closes the road. Under it every vehicle, including all-wheel drive, needs chains or an approved traction device on two or more drive tires. CDOT lists a $100 fine plus a $33 surcharge for non-compliance, rising to $500 plus a $157 surcharge if your vehicle blocks a travel lane.
Commercial vehicles over 16,000 pounds, and any vehicle carrying 16 or more passengers including the driver, must carry chains from September 1 through May 31 on I-70 west of Morrison regardless of the weather that day. If you have booked a coach bus to a ski resort in February, that requirement applies to your ride.
Rental cars are where winter trips go wrong
The traction law does not care that you did not know about it.
A two-wheel drive rental with all-season tires is not compliant when the law goes active, and under SB25-069 two-wheel drive vehicles must carry chains or an approved traction device from September 1 through May 31 regardless of tires. Every winter, the shoulders of I-70 fill with visitors in sedans they were handed at the airport counter, waiting for a tow they will pay for on a day when every tow truck in Summit County is already busy.
Hiring a chauffeur is not only about comfort in January. It moves the vehicle, the equipment, and the decision about whether to drive at all onto somebody who does this corridor year-round.

Winter questions, answered
Does Arion operate during Denver snowstorms?
Yes. Winter storms are normal operating conditions in Colorado, not an exception. We do not cancel a confirmed ride because of weather. If a road closes we reroute, and if a flight diverts we follow the passenger.
What is the Colorado Traction Law and when does it apply to my ride?

What happens if I-70 closes while we are driving?
We hold, reroute, or stage somewhere warm with the passengers informed, and we keep you updated. Closures on I-70 are usually measured in hours. A chauffeur who knows the corridor is worth more on those days than any vehicle specification.
What if my flight is delayed or diverted by a storm?
We track the flight, so a delay is our problem before it is yours. We do not cancel a pickup because an arrival slid. If a Denver-bound flight diverts to Colorado Springs, we can meet it there. We only stand down on your instruction, or if there has been no reply an hour after landing.
Should I book earlier in winter than in summer?
Yes, and leave earlier too. A DIA to Vail transfer that runs two hours on a clear September afternoon can take three or more during a storm cycle with the traction law active. We build that buffer into winter quotes rather than discovering it at the mountain.

What happens if Colorado's traction law is in effect?
Nothing changes for you. Our vehicles meet Colorado's traction law requirements as they sit, so there is no swap, no surcharge and no scramble the morning of your trip. On vans and buses your chauffeur may pull over to fit chains when conditions call for it. It takes a few minutes, and it is the reason the trip keeps moving while other vehicles are turned around at the checkpoint.
How early do we leave the mountains for a flight home?
In winter we add two hours to the normal drive time. Not because the road is usually bad, but because the one morning it is should not be the morning you miss a flight. For a noon departure out of DEN that means leaving Vail around 7:00 a.m. Your chauffeur confirms the pickup time the day before, once we have seen the forecast and the pass conditions.
