Rocky Mountain National Park

Trail Ridge Road, alpine tundra, and two gateway towns on either side of the Continental Divide

Home Destinations Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park straddles the Continental Divide roughly 70 miles northwest of Denver, protecting over 415 square miles of peaks, alpine lakes, and tundra. Trail Ridge Road — the highest continuous paved road in North America — connects the park's two gateway towns: Estes Park on the east side and Grand Lake on the west. The park draws over four million visitors a year. Getting there from DIA takes about 90 minutes to Estes Park or three hours to Grand Lake. Timed-entry reservations are required during peak season, and parking inside the park fills early.

Seasonal Notes

Trail Ridge Road is typically open late May through mid-October, depending on snow. Summer is peak season — reserve timed-entry permits in advance. Fall elk rut (September–October) draws wildlife viewers. Winter closes most of Trail Ridge Road but opens cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.
