Picking the Right Airport for Aspen
One is nine minutes from your hotel and cancels. One is four and a half hours away and always flies. And for eight months of 2027 the first one does not exist at all.
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) sits 4 road miles and about 9 minutes from downtown Aspen, against 222 miles and 4 to 4.5 hours from Denver International (DEN). ASE is the shortest airport transfer in Colorado when your flight lands — but it has one of the highest weather cancellation and diversion rates in the country, a 95-foot maximum wingspan restriction, a night curfew, and it closes entirely from April 4 to November 19, 2027. DEN always flies and puts a four-hour mountain drive in front of you. Eagle County (EGE, 70 miles) and Grand Junction (GJT, 125 miles) are the two options most people never price out.

What ASE actually buys you
The shortest airport transfer we run anywhere in Colorado. Four road miles, about nine minutes up CO-82 into town; Snowmass Village is 6 miles and roughly 11. Land at 1:40, be in your room before 2:15. Nothing else in the state comes close, and on a two-night trip that difference is the whole trip.
Because the leg is so short, it is quoted against the vehicle minimum rather than by distance — two hours on a sedan or SUV. That is worth knowing in advance, because people expect a nine-minute ride to be priced like a nine-minute ride.
The trade is that ASE is a hard airport to fly into. It sits at 7,820 feet in a valley with terrain on three sides, the FAA restricts it to aircraft with a maximum wingspan of 95 feet, and county noise ordinance closes it at night — no departures after 10:30 p.m. Add mountain weather and you get an airport where a meaningful share of winter flights do not land. In December 2023, 95.8% of scheduled flights were neither cancelled nor diverted; in December 2022 that number was 88.7%. On a good month roughly one flight in twenty-five still does not arrive as scheduled, and in a bad storm cycle it is far worse than that.
When a flight does not make it in, it lands at Denver, Grand Junction or Eagle County instead, and then somebody has to drive you the rest of the way.
What DEN actually buys you
Certainty about the flight, at the cost of the longest resort transfer in Colorado. Denver International is 222 road miles and about 4 to 4.5 hours from Aspen in clear conditions — I-70 west to Glenwood Springs, then CO-82 southeast through Carbondale and Basalt. Independence Pass is shorter on the map but it is closed roughly October through May, unlit, narrow and posted against vehicles over 35 feet, so for the whole ski season the canyon route is the only route.
What you get for those four hours is a hub. If your afternoon flight into Denver is cancelled there is another one that evening. That is not true at Aspen in February. Fares are lower, the schedule is year-round, and a family of six can fly DEN for less than two people can fly ASE.
The risk on this route is Glenwood Canyon. It closes for rockfall and mudslide as readily as for snow, and when it closes the detour is over Cottonwood Pass or north through Steamboat — three hours or more on top of the four. An operator who runs the corridor checks the canyon before setting a departure time; that is the entire difference between a four-hour drive you booked and a seven-hour drive you did not.
The two airports everyone forgets
Aspen is unusual in that it has four realistic airports, not two, and the middle two are frequently the right answer:
- Eagle County (EGE) — 70 miles, about 1.5 hours. The closest alternative to ASE, over Tennessee Pass or down through Glenwood depending on conditions. Seasonal schedule concentrated in the ski months, but when it flies it saves you three hours against Denver. EGE to Aspen car service.
- Grand Junction (GJT) — 125 miles, about 2.5 hours. The one nobody prices out. It approaches Aspen from the west, the elevation profile is gentle, and there is no pass to close — east on I-70 along the Colorado River, then up CO-82 from Glenwood. GJT to Aspen car service.
- Rifle (RIL) — 66 miles. Private aviation only in practice, but it is the closest field to Aspen after ASE itself and a standard diversion alternate. Rifle private aviation transfers.
Practical version: if ASE fares are absurd or the forecast is ugly, look at Grand Junction before you look at Denver. Two and a half hours of driving beats four and a half, and the road is easier.
2027: the year ASE is not an option
This one is not a judgement call. The Aspen/Pitkin County Airport closes to all aircraft operations at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 2027 and is scheduled to reopen at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2027, for voter-approved runway reconstruction. For that entire summer and shoulder season — Food & Wine Classic, the Music Festival, Ideas Festival, every wedding and every board retreat — there are no commercial or private flights into Aspen at all.
Everyone arrives by road. Eagle County becomes the default at about 70 miles and 1.5 hours, Grand Junction at 125 miles and 2.5 hours, and Denver at 222 miles and 4 to 4.5 hours with by far the deepest flight schedule. The Numbers
What the delay data actually says about Aspen
Aspen-Pitkin County Airport is a single runway at 7,820 feet in a valley that narrows at both ends, and the approach requires higher minimums than most pilots ever fly elsewhere. Across roughly 78,000 flights from 2020 to 2025 the on-time rate sits around 73%, cancellations run near 3.9%, and when a departure is late the average delay is over an hour and a half.
Those are averages across the year, and averages hide January. In a three-week stretch during the 2021–22 holiday peak, a third of scheduled outbound flights were cancelled and one inbound flight in twenty was diverted. If your trip is in the first week of January, plan for that number rather than the annual one.
What a diversion actually means. A diverted aircraft usually lands at Grand Junction, Eagle or Denver. From there it is two and a half hours, two hours, or four hours by road, and every other passenger on your flight wants the same car. Diversions are the single most common reason we get a call from an airport we were not expecting.
The 2027 closure is the bigger planning item. ASE is scheduled to close for runway reconstruction from April 4 to November 19, 2027. That is an entire summer season with no commercial service into Aspen, and every alternative on this page becomes the only option rather than a fallback.
How we would actually choose
- Flying private — ASE, if your aircraft fits. The 95-foot wingspan limit is the constraint, and it rules out a lot of heavy metal. We meet at the Atlantic Aviation FBO, which runs 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. ASE FBO transfers.
- Two to four people, three nights or fewer, schedule over money — ASE. The nine-minute transfer is worth real money on a short trip.
- Six or more, or a family with kids and ski gear — DEN or EGE. The fare gap multiplies by headcount and a van absorbs the drive.
- Mid-January through February with a storm cycle in the forecast — DEN. You want recovery flights, not a diversion to Grand Junction at 9 p.m.
- Arriving late — DEN. ASE's curfew means no departures after 10:30 p.m. and the schedule thins well before that.
- International arrival — DEN. Clear customs, then drive. Making a short ASE connection in winter after customs is a coin flip.
- Anything between April 4 and November 19, 2027 — DEN, EGE or GJT. ASE is closed.
And the move most people miss: fly into one and out of the other. Arrival-day weather and departure-day weather are separate problems, and we will run either leg.
The cost comparison nobody does correctly
The usual mistake is comparing airfare to airfare and treating the ground leg as noise. On the Aspen routes the ground leg is not noise. An ASE transfer bills at the vehicle minimum; a Denver transfer is a four-and-a-half-hour drive in each direction. That gap is large enough to change the answer, in both directions, depending on how many seats you are buying.
Rates are hourly base rates before tax, fees and gratuity, with the first 40 miles of each booking included. Luxury Sedan $150/hr (3 passengers, 2-hour minimum), Executive SUV $125/hr (5), Luxury SUV $150/hr, Luxury Coach Van $250/hr (12, 3 hr minimum), Executive/Jet Van $325/hr (9) on a 4-hour minimum. Stretch limousines, party buses and coach buses are quote only. Seasonal rule: from November 1 through April 30 the Luxury SUV is booked at 5 passengers rather than 6, because gear and luggage need the sixth seat. The rate is locked when you book; a storm or a full flight does not change it.

Is it cheaper to fly into Denver and drive to Aspen?

Can large private jets land at Aspen?
