Rifle Garfield County Airport sits in the Colorado River valley 5 miles from the town of Rifle and 25 miles west of Glenwood Springs. Its runway is 7,000 feet by 100 feet and the airport states it accommodates large jet aircraft including 727s and 737s, which is a different category of field from the short mountain strips nearby.

Rifle publishes ILS and GPS approaches, certified AWOS weather, and an RCAG link to Denver Center. The ILS is now continuously monitored, which is what makes Rifle available as an alternate 24 hours a day. The airport's own guidance to pilots is blunt about the role it plays: request Rifle if you miss Aspen or Eagle, and request Rifle 100 miles out if either goes down while you are in the air.

Atlantic Aviation is the FBO
Atlantic Aviation has been the fixed-base operator at Rifle since it purchased Rifle Air in November 2007. The field carries 91,500 square feet of heated hangar space. Atlantic has been remodeling its Rifle facilities and has temporarily relocated during construction, so confirm the current building with them before you brief a passenger on where to meet.
Our side of it does not change. Give us the tail number and we track the aircraft, coordinate the meet with Atlantic's line staff, and stage the vehicle so it is in position when the door opens. If your wheels-down time moves by two hours, the pickup moves with it and nobody pays a delay fee.
When Aspen closes in 2027
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport closes Sunday, April 4, 2027 through Friday, November 19, 2027 for runway reconstruction. In its own closure guidance, Pitkin County names Rifle Garfield County Airport as the field available for general aviation flights during that window. Aspen will also be closed to helicopter traffic for the construction period, with operators directed to Glenwood Springs or Rifle for parking.
For seven months, a Rifle arrival plus a 90-minute ground leg is one of the realistic ways into Aspen by private aircraft. We are already quoting that summer. If you coordinate for an owner or a charter client, book the ground side early, because the vehicle supply in this valley is finite and every operator in Colorado can read the same closure notice.
What we actually put on the ramp
Luxury SUVs carry 5 passengers in winter with skis and boards on the roof, and 6 the rest of the year. The Executive Jet Van seats 9 with a 4-hour minimum, which is the vehicle for a full aircraft plus gear. Vehicle capacity and minimums are the same whether you are a first-time charter passenger or a flight department we bill monthly.
Ski and snowboard gear rides on open racks or in a covered box. A Gulfstream that lands with eight sets of skis is a vehicle-selection problem, and it is easier to solve at booking than on the ramp, so tell us the gear count when you tell us the tail number.
