Why this route is underrated
Almost everyone flying to Aspen thinks of Denver first, and for good reason: the flight schedule is unmatched. But Denver puts you four and a half hours away on the busiest highway corridor in the state, over the Continental Divide, through the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet.
Grand Junction approaches from the other side. You follow the Colorado River east through Palisade, De Beque and Rifle, into Glenwood Springs, and then up the valley. The elevation profile is gentle, there is no pass to close, and the airport itself takes about ten minutes to walk out of. For travelers who dislike the I-70 westbound experience — and there are many — it is the calmer option.

Winter on this side of the state
The I-70 stretch east of Grand Junction sits lower and generally sees milder weather than the Front Range side of the divide. Glenwood Canyon is the one section that closes on occasion, for rockfall as often as for snow. The real winter driving is the last 40 miles up CO-82 from Glenwood Springs to Aspen.
We plan for it. Winter trips carry an extra hour of buffer, closures are checked before the trip, and route changes are made by the chauffeur en route with the reason explained to you rather than left as a mystery.
