EGE or DEN?
Picking the Right Airport for Vail
One is 36 miles away and expensive. One is 121 miles away and reliable. The right answer changes with your dates, your group and your tolerance for a re-route.
For Vail and Beaver Creek, Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is 29–36 road miles and about 30–35 minutes from the resorts, while Denver International (DEN) is 121–133 miles and about 2 to 2.5 hours over the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass. EGE saves roughly two hours of ground time each way but has fewer flights, higher fares and more weather cancellations; DEN has far more flights and a long, occasionally closed drive. Groups of six or more and mid-winter storm windows usually favor DEN.
The two-minute version
What EGE actually buys you
Two hours. That is the entire pitch, and on a four-day ski trip it is a real one. Land at 11:40, be clicking into bindings by 1:00. Fly out at 3:00, leave the condo at noon. There is no Vail Pass in the equation, no tunnel, no hour and a half of I-70 in the dark on the way home Sunday.
EGE is also a small terminal, which means the walk from gate to bag to car is short. Our own record puts the median EGE passenger in the vehicle 30 minutes after the flight-linked pickup time. At Denver the same median is about 18 minutes, but then you have a two-hour drive in front of you rather than thirty-five minutes.
The trade is exposure. EGE runs a seasonal schedule concentrated in the ski months — 97% of the Eagle County transfers in our record are November through March — on a limited set of routes. Fewer flights means fewer recovery options when one is cancelled, and a mountain airport at 6,480 feet in a valley cancels and diverts more often than a plains hub does.
What DEN actually buys you
Optionality. If your 6 p.m. into Denver is cancelled there is an 8 p.m. and a 9:40. That is not true at Eagle County in February. Fares are lower, the routes are year-round, and a family of six can usually fly DEN for less than two people can fly EGE.
You pay for it in ground time, and in the specific risk of I-70. The Denver route crosses the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet and Vail Pass at 10,662 feet, both of which close during storms and both of which are subject to Colorado's Traction Law. Our own DEN record shows the winter effect clearly: the average time from flight-linked pickup to passenger in the vehicle runs 25.5 minutes November through March against 20.1 the rest of the year, a 27% increase — and that is before the drive starts.
The compensating fact is that the drive is drivable. A closed pass reopens in hours. A cancelled EGE flight in a storm cycle can strand you for a day.
How we would actually choose
After several hundred transfers out of both airports, the pattern is fairly consistent:
- Two to four people, three days or fewer, schedule matters more than money — fly EGE. The ground-time savings is the biggest single lever on a short trip.
- Six or more, or a family with kids and gear — fly DEN. The fare gap multiplies by headcount, and a van from Denver costs less than the airfare delta.
- Mid-January through mid-February, big storm cycle in the forecast — fly DEN. You want recovery flights, not a scenic diversion to Grand Junction.
- Flying private — EGE, obviously. The FBO is at the airport, we meet on the tarmac, and none of the commercial-schedule argument applies.
- Arriving late at night — DEN. EGE's schedule thins out after evening; a late DEN arrival plus a night drive is often the only way to be on the mountain the next morning.
- Connecting from an international arrival — DEN. Clearing customs and then making a short EGE connection in winter is a coin flip you do not need.
And the option most people forget: fly into EGE, fly out of DEN, or the reverse. Departure-day weather and arrival-day weather are different problems. We will run either leg.
The cost comparison nobody does correctly
The usual mistake is comparing airfare to airfare and treating the ground leg as noise. For a party of four to Vail the ground leg is a rounding error next to a $300-per-seat fare gap; for a party of two it is not.
Rates are hourly and all-inclusive except gratuity, with the first 40 miles of each booking included. Executive Sedan $150/hr (3 passengers, 2-hour minimum), Executive SUV $125/hr (5), Luxury SUV $150/hr, Luxury Coach Van $250/hr (12, 3-hour minimum), Executive/Jet Van $325/hr (9) on a 4-hour minimum. Stretch limousines, party buses and coach buses are quote only. Seasonal rule: from November 1 through April 30 the Luxury SUV is booked at 5 passengers rather than 6, because gear and luggage need the sixth seat. The rate is locked when you book; a storm or a full flight does not change it.
Because we bill by the hour with the first 40 miles of the booking included, an EGE transfer lands at the two-hour minimum and a Denver transfer runs longer. Multiply that by two directions, subtract it from the fare difference, and the answer usually resolves itself. Ask us for both quotes side by side — we would rather give you the honest comparison than sell you the longer drive.
Either way, the same operation

Flights are tracked at both. Wait time after a flight is included at both. And at both, if the flight is cancelled we issue a credit and rebook rather than treating it as a no-show.
Cancellation terms are the same on every booking: full refund at 48 hours or more, up to 50% inside 48 hours, nothing inside 24. Tours run on a 7-day window.

Does I-70 close between Denver and Vail?
Several times each winter, usually at the Eisenhower Tunnel or on Vail Pass, and usually for hours rather than days. Colorado's Traction Law applies on that corridor; our vehicles run 4WD and state-approved winter tires, which satisfies it without chains.
Which airport is better for a large group going to Beaver Creek?
Denver, in most cases. Fare savings multiply by headcount and a 12-passenger van handles the drive comfortably. The exception is a corporate group on a tight one-night schedule, where the four hours of round-trip ground time is the expensive part.
How long does it take to get out of the airport itself?
In our record the median passenger is in the vehicle about 30 minutes after the flight-linked pickup time at EGE and about 18 minutes at DEN. EGE's ski bags are the difference. Wait time is included at both.
Is there a shuttle instead?
There are shared shuttles from both airports. They are cheaper and they stop for other passengers, which on the Denver route can add an hour and on a storm day more. A private transfer is a fixed party, a fixed vehicle and a fixed rate.
Do you serve Aspen from these airports too?
Yes — from Eagle County, from Denver and from Grand Junction. Aspen's own airport (ASE) closes April 4 through November 19, 2027 for runway reconstruction, which makes EGE and GJT the practical options for that whole summer.
