Three Towns, No Ski Resort

Why so many ski weeks start in Frisco, Silverthorne or Dillon

None of these three towns has a lift. That is the point. They sit on I-70 in the middle of Summit County, and from any of them Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin are all a short drive away. Families who want to ski Copper on Monday, Breckenridge on Tuesday and A-Basin when it snows book a rental here and move around by car or on the county's free Summit Stage buses, which run out of the Frisco Transfer Center by exit 203.

For the transfer itself, the three towns behave the same way: they are the first stop over the Divide, and none of them needs a mountain pass beyond the tunnel. That makes this one of the more predictable mountain runs out of DEN. Vail Pass, which closes on its own schedule, is west of Copper and does not stand between the airport and any of these towns. When the tunnel closes and Loveland Pass is open, the pass drops straight down toward Keystone and Dillon, so this corner of the county is also the easiest to reach by the detour.

Timing And Weather

When to fly in, and when the road fights back

Ski-traffic windows. The westbound crush is Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning, when the Front Range heads up for the weekend. The eastbound crush is Sunday from late morning into the evening, and it is the one that catches airport runs, because everybody leaving Summit County funnels back through the tunnel and down past Idaho Springs at once. A midweek arrival is the easiest version of this trip. If your flight lands Saturday morning, the westbound traffic is already moving ahead of you; plan the day around it rather than a fixed dinner reservation.

How much to add. In clear conditions, plan on about 2 hours. In an active storm, plan three. On a busy Sunday the eastbound return can add ninety minutes on its own. Traction and chain law. From September 1 through May 31, Colorado's Passenger Vehicle Traction Law applies to I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison whenever CDOT activates it, which covers every mile of this route in the mountains. Under the Traction Law (Code 15) vehicles need AWD or 4WD with adequate tread, or winter-rated tires. When the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law (Code 16) goes up, which is rarer, every vehicle needs chains or an approved traction device. Our vehicles meet the Traction Law as they sit and carry chains. Which vehicle fits which group. Two travelers with carry-ons and a suit bag ride well in the Luxury Sedan, a 2023 Mercedes EQS 450 and our only all-electric vehicle, which seats three. A couple or small family with skis fits the Executive SUV, an older mid-to-high trim with 8 bags of cargo room. The Luxury SUV is the late-model flagship trim (Escalade, Navigator L or Denali) and seats six, but five from November 1 to April 30, because ski gear takes the sixth seat's space. Once a group passes five people with gear, or four with hard ski cases and a week of luggage, it belongs in a van: the Executive Van and Jet Van seat nine, the Luxury Coach Van twelve. If we got one ski week in Summit County, we'd base it in Frisco

If we had one week and wanted to ski four mountains, we would stay in Frisco and skip the car rental entirely. Copper is the closest resort. Breckenridge is straight down CO 9. The free bus reaches Keystone, and in ski season a Frisco–A-Basin run goes on to Arapahoe Basin. You pick the mountain each morning based on where it snowed, and nobody has to find parking at a resort base on a powder day.

For the evening after a long travel day, walk Frisco's Main Street down to the marina at the east end, where the street meets the reservoir. With kids, the town-run Frisco Adventure Park on the Peninsula has a tubing hill in winter. Reservations are required, and the hill is normally closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so check before you promise anyone a tubing afternoon.

Summit County weather, without the brochure

These towns sit between about 8,800 and 9,100 feet, lower than the resort bases around them but a long way above Denver. Altitude hits visitors harder than snow does: headaches, poor sleep and a first day that feels harder than it should. Drink water on the drive up and go easy the first night.

Silverthorne sits in a valley that traps cold air, so early mornings there are often colder than you expect, and Frisco picks up more snow than Silverthorne because it sits closer to the Tenmile Range. Neither matters much for the transfer. What matters is the tunnel, the west-side descent and the Georgetown grade, which get weather the towns never see. Built by a railroad scout, a reservoir and an interstate

Frisco was founded in 1873 when Henry Recen built a cabin in the valley. In 1875 a scout named Captain Henry Learned carved “Frisco City” over the door, hoping to draw the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, known as the Frisco Line. The line never came, but the name stuck, and the town incorporated in December 1880 during the silver boom. The story that a homesick miner named it after San Francisco is not what the town's own historians say.

Dillon is younger than it looks. Denver Water needed the valley floor for a reservoir, and in the late 1950s and early 1960s the old town was bought out and rebuilt on higher ground. The dam was finished in December 1963, and the original townsite is under the water. Silverthorne grew up below the dam as a camp for the workers who built it, then as a stop on the new interstate, and incorporated in 1967. It takes its name from Marshall Silverthorn, a Breckenridge miners' court judge who claimed land on the Lower Blue in the 1880s.
