The Drive
Twenty-five miles of prairie, then a city that is under construction
Peña Boulevard is the only way off the airport, and it runs twelve miles across open prairie before it meets anything. From there it is I-70 west and down I-25, or the surface route through Central Park and Colfax when the interstate is stopped. Nothing about this is scenic, and all of it is timing.
The airport was built far out on purpose, on land annexed from Adams County, which is why a downtown hotel that looks close on a map is a genuine half-hour away with no traffic and closer to an hour at five o'clock on a weekday.
How much time to add. Off-peak, thirty to thirty-five minutes. Weekday afternoon, fifty to sixty. During a Broncos or Nuggets event downtown, add whatever the stadium is doing to I-25, and let us pick a drop point a block off the closure rather than sitting in it.
Where we actually stop matters here. Downtown has bus-only lanes, protected bike lanes, one-way pairs and hotels whose front doors face streets you cannot turn onto. Give dispatch the hotel name rather than the address and the car will be at the right door on the right side.

What the trip costs you in time, by hour of day
Denver International Airport to downtown is 26 miles on Peña Boulevard and I-70, or Peña to I-270 and I-25 depending on conditions. Off-peak it is a 35-minute drive. Between 7 and 9 a.m. inbound and 4 and 6:30 p.m. outbound, plan 50 to 60 minutes. Sunday evenings, when the entire mountain corridor returns and merges into the same interchange, are worse than most weekday rush hours.
Peña Boulevard itself is the variable nobody plans for. It is the only road in and out of the airport, and a single incident on it can add half an hour with no alternate route. For departures we build in that margin rather than optimizing to the minute; for a 6 a.m. flight out of DEN that means a pickup earlier than most travellers think is necessary.
Where a pre-arranged car meets you, and why it matters

The Destination, By The People Who Drive It
A city that started as a real estate play at the mouth of Cherry Creek
Denver was not founded on gold so much as on the rumour of it. In November 1858 William Larimer's party jumped an existing townsite claim at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte, formed the Denver City Town Company, and named the place after the governor of Kansas Territory in the hope of political favour. The gold in Cherry Creek ran out quickly. The town survived because it sold supplies to everyone heading into the mountains, and it has been doing a version of that ever since.
The 1914 station reopened in 2014 as the centre of downtown: a great hall you can sit in without buying anything, surrounded by the warehouse blocks of Lower Downtown.

If we got one hour, it would be Union Station and the block around it
The station opened in 1881, burned in 1894, was rebuilt, and was replaced by the granite building standing today, which reopened in 1914. By the 1980s it was a near-empty hall with a handful of trains. The 2014 renovation turned it into a working transit hub and a public living room: bars, a hotel, benches and a floor you can stand on to watch the whole thing move.
Walk two blocks in any direction from it and you get the best of downtown on foot: the Wynkoop and Larimer blocks, the ballpark, the river. It is also the terminus of the A Line train from the airport, which we will happily tell you about when it is the better tool for the job.
The weather, told straight
Denver's reputation for sunshine is earned, and the corollary is that the weather changes fast. The city sits at 5,280 feet on the dry side of the range, so a March storm can drop a foot of wet snow and be gone in two days, and an April afternoon can run from seventy degrees to hail.
For travellers, the two real disruptors are ground stops at DEN during a blizzard and the wind on Peña Boulevard, which is exposed for its entire length. Our dispatch watches both, and if the airport is holding aircraft we move the pickup rather than let a car sit on the curb.
Why the mile matters more than people expect
The 13th step of the Capitol is marked at exactly one mile above sea level, and the altitude is not just trivia.
