Grand Lake, Colorado

RMNP's quieter side — Colorado's largest natural lake and a boardwalk that feels frozen in time

Home Destinations Rocky Mountain National Park Grand Lake

Grand Lake sits at the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, on the shore of Colorado's largest and deepest natural lake. While Estes Park gets the bulk of the park's four million annual visitors, Grand Lake remains the quieter alternative — a genuine mountain town with a wooden boardwalk downtown, a handful of restaurants that close when they feel like it, and access to the same Trail Ridge Road scenery without the crowds. The town is surrounded by three lakes (Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, and Lake Granby), making it the recreational boating capital of Colorado. In winter, when Trail Ridge Road closes, Grand Lake becomes one of the most isolated and peaceful towns in the state.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Grand Lake from Denver?

The most common route is US-40 over Berthoud Pass to Granby, then US-34 north to Grand Lake — about 2 to 2.5 hours. When Trail Ridge Road is open (late May–mid October), you can also drive through the park from Estes Park, but that adds time and requires a park pass.

Is Grand Lake less crowded than Estes Park?

Significantly. Grand Lake gets a fraction of the visitors, even though it provides access to the same park. The tradeoff is fewer amenities and a smaller town.
