Great Sand Dunes & Stargazing
750 Feet of Sand. 14,000-Foot Peaks. Zero Light Pollution.
Great Sand Dunes National Park sits about three hours south of Denver in the San Luis Valley. The dunes are the tallest in North America — 750 feet — backed by the Sangre de Cristo range. Most people don't know it's there. This two-day tour covers the dunes plus the valley's strangest and best stops: a gator farm running on geothermal water at 7,500 feet, a UFO watchtower with 110+ reported sightings, and Zapata Falls, a waterfall tucked inside a rock slot you have to wade through to reach.
We time the drive so you're on the dunes at sunset and back out after dark for stargazing — the park has gold-tier International Dark Sky certification, meaning the Milky Way is visible without a telescope. Morning is for sunrise on the sand and an optional hike up High Dune before heading to Zapata Falls and home.
750-Foot Dunes
Tallest in North America. No trails, no boardwalks — you walk straight onto open sand.
Dark Sky Park
Gold-tier Dark Sky certification. You can see the Milky Way without binoculars.
Colorado Gators
400+ alligators living in geothermal water at 7,500 feet elevation. Yes, really.
UFO Watchtower
110+ reported sightings from this San Luis Valley observation deck. Make of that what you will.
Zapata Falls
Short hike to a waterfall inside a rock slot. You wade through a creek to get there — bring water shoes.
Sunrise on Sand
Early morning is when the dunes look their best. Low light, long shadows, nobody else around.
