Two-Day Overnight Tour

Great Sand Dunes & Stargazing

2 days · ~14 hours ~300 miles round trip From $499/person
Overview

750 Feet of Sand. 14,000-Foot Peaks. Zero Light Pollution.

Great Sand Dunes National Park sits about three hours south of Denver in the San Luis Valley. The dunes are the tallest in North America — 750 feet — backed by the Sangre de Cristo range. Most people don't know it's there. This two-day tour covers the dunes plus the valley's strangest and best stops: a gator farm running on geothermal water at 7,500 feet, a UFO watchtower with 110+ reported sightings, and Zapata Falls, a waterfall tucked inside a rock slot you have to wade through to reach.

We time the drive so you're on the dunes at sunset and back out after dark for stargazing — the park has gold-tier International Dark Sky certification, meaning the Milky Way is visible without a telescope. Morning is for sunrise on the sand and an optional hike up High Dune before heading to Zapata Falls and home.

🏜️

Early morning is when the dunes look their best. Low light, long shadows, nobody else around.

Seasonal Notes

Best months: May through early October.

Medano Creek: Flows late May through early June in average snow years. It creates "surge flow" waves — basically a natural beach at 8,200 feet.

Stargazing tip: New moon weekends give the darkest skies. We check the lunar calendar and help you pick the right dates. August and September are best for the Milky Way.

Heat advisory: Sand surface temps can hit 150°F on summer afternoons. We schedule the dune walk for late afternoon when the sand cools down.
