If Highway 119 is the smart value play, US-36 is where the serious contenders live.
This corridor connects Boulder to Denver and cuts through some of the most desirable communities along Colorado's Front Range: Westminster, Broomfield, Superior, and Louisville. For decades, US-36 served as the primary artery between Colorado's biggest city and one of its most interesting communities. Today, the corridor has become a destination itself.
For Sundance visitors, US-36 offers something Boulder can't: options. A lot of them.
While Boulder has relatively limited hotel inventory, the US-36 corridor has thousands of rooms ranging from budget-friendly extended stays to full-service luxury properties. Many of these were built specifically for business travelers, conferences, and executives. The result? Newer hotels, larger rooms, easier parking, and often significantly lower rates than downtown Boulder.
That doesn't mean they're better. It means they're different. The tradeoff is straightforward: you spend more time in a vehicle, less money on your room. Whether that's a good deal depends entirely on your priorities.
Quick Take: The Westin Westminster is the first property I'd evaluate if Boulder sells out. The Omni Interlocken is the executive pick. The Drury Plaza may be the festival's sleeper hit. The Origin Westminster brings personality that most corridor hotels don't.
Who the US-36 Corridor Actually Attracts
The communities along US-36 each bring their own personality. Louisville has one of Colorado's best small-town downtown districts. Superior represents one of the state's most remarkable rebuilding stories after the Marshall Fire. Broomfield has quietly become a corporate-travel hub. Westminster delivers some of the strongest hotel values anywhere between Denver and Boulder.
And unlike Denver, you're still close enough to Sundance to participate fully without feeling like you're commuting from another city.
In my experience, the US-36 corridor will attract a very specific Sundance attendee:
- The executive who wants a better room than Boulder can offer at that price
- The sponsor hosting clients who need space and infrastructure
- The filmmaker traveling with a team that needs multiple rooms
- The visitor attending six days of screenings instead of two
- The person who looked at Boulder hotel rates and decided there has to be a smarter approach

The 10 Best Hotels Along US-36
#1 — The Westin Westminster: Best Overall Position
If Boulder hotels sell out — and they will — this is the first property I'd look at.
The Westin occupies maybe the most strategic position along the entire Denver-Boulder corridor. It sits almost perfectly between downtown Denver and Boulder while delivering mountain views, a full-service hotel experience, and a reputation that works equally well for business travelers and leisure guests. Unlike many corridor hotels, the Westin actually feels like a destination rather than a place to sleep between screenings. For Sundance attendees, the combination of professional service, predictable transportation times, nearby dining, and direct US-36 access makes it one of the strongest overall choices outside Boulder.

#2 — Omni Interlocken: The Executive Pick
The Omni is what I recommend for executives, sponsors, production companies, and guests who want breathing room after a full festival day.
Unlike downtown Boulder properties, the Omni has space. The resort-style setting, golf course views, and upscale atmosphere create a completely different experience than staying in the thick of festival chaos. Some attendees will call that a disadvantage. Others will call it exactly what they needed. The property consistently ranks among Broomfield's top hotels and attracts travelers who expect higher-end accommodations without negotiation. During Sundance, it offers a real balance between Boulder access and personal decompression space.

#3 — Renaissance Boulder FlatIron Hotel: Luxury Feel Without Boulder Pricing
If someone wants a luxury experience without the Boulder price tag, this is often where I start.
The Renaissance benefits from its FlatIron Crossing position while staying close to Boulder. Guests keep mentioning the oversized suites, mountain views, and upscale atmosphere — and they're right. For Sundance visitors, the biggest advantage is value. You'll often get a larger room and better amenities than comparable Boulder properties while keeping the drive to festival venues manageable. The hotel pulls business travelers year-round, which usually means smoother operations and fewer surprises during high-demand periods.

#4 — Drury Plaza Hotel Denver Westminster: The Sleeper Hit
This may become the sleeper hit of Sundance. I'm saying it now.
The Drury doesn't carry the prestige of the Omni or Westin, but it consistently earns some of the strongest guest satisfaction scores on the corridor. The included breakfast, evening food-and-drink offerings, convenient US-36 location, and reputation for genuinely good service make it particularly attractive for independent filmmakers, journalists, and attendees footing their own bill. During a week-long festival, those included amenities represent meaningful savings. It's one of the best values between Denver and Boulder, and nobody's talking about it yet.

#5 — Origin Hotel Westminster: The One With Actual Personality
Most corridor hotels feel interchangeable. The Origin does not.
Located in the developing Downtown Westminster district, this property delivers a more contemporary Colorado feel than the national chains surrounding it. Origin was specifically positioned as a midpoint between Denver and Boulder and benefits from nearby restaurants, entertainment, and trail access. For younger attendees, creatives, and visitors who want something less corporate, Origin brings energy that most business hotels genuinely don't have. It's the kind of place where you might actually hang out in the lobby by choice.

#6 — Hyatt Place Denver / Westminster: The Reliable Midfield
Hyatt Place excels at being dependable. That's not exciting marketing copy, but it's incredibly valuable during a festival that will test everyone's logistics.
Spacious rooms, a location directly adjacent to US-36, and a reputation for consistency make this a practical choice for guests who plan to spend most of their waking hours at screenings. The property puts visitors almost equidistant between Boulder and Denver, which creates flexibility if your plans shift mid-week — and during Sundance, plans shift mid-week.

#7 — DoubleTree by Hilton Denver Westminster: The Location Play
The DoubleTree has served this corridor for years and benefits from one simple advantage: it's right there.
Located directly off US-36, the property offers straightforward access to Boulder without navigation gymnastics. It isn't the newest hotel on the corridor, but it remains dependable for travelers prioritizing convenience over aesthetics. During major events, predictable beats flashy more often than people expect. And yes, the cookies at check-in still work as a loyalty mechanism. I'm not above admitting that.

#8 — Aloft Broomfield Denver: The Creative Crowd Hotel
This is the hotel I'd point younger attendees, creatives, journalists, and people who care more about energy than tradition toward.
Aloft doesn't try to be the Ritz. It doesn't try to be the Brown Palace. It leans into a more modern, social atmosphere and owns that lane. Guests frequently mention clean rooms, convenient location, and an approachable vibe. The tradeoff is some inconsistency compared to higher-ranked properties. For Sundance attendees who plan to spend most of their time at screenings, restaurants, and networking events rather than evaluating hotel lobbies, that's usually a fair exchange.

#9 — Hyatt House Boulder / Broomfield: The Week-Long Workhorse
If you're staying a full week, this hotel deserves more attention than its ranking suggests.
Most Sundance hotel lists focus on luxury. Hyatt House focuses on practicality. Larger rooms, kitchen facilities, complimentary breakfast, and an extended-stay design make it particularly attractive for filmmakers, production staff, journalists, and anyone working remotely while attending the festival. The location gives solid access to both Boulder and Denver. Is it exciting? Not particularly. Is it useful? Extremely. And during a ten-day festival, useful wins more arguments than exciting does.

#10 — Fairfield Inn & Suites Boulder Broomfield/Interlocken: The Budget-Conscious Base Camp
The Fairfield isn't going to generate passionate debate. That's actually the point.
It occupies the same Interlocken corridor that makes the Omni and Renaissance attractive, but at a significantly lower price point. Complimentary breakfast, proximity to restaurants, and easy US-36 access make it a practical Sundance base camp. This is the hotel I recommend to attendees who'd rather spend their budget on films, dinners, and experiences than on their room. You probably won't tell stories about the hotel afterward. You also probably won't have a single complaint during your stay. For a lot of travelers, that's exactly the right formula.

The Commute Reality
US-36 between Westminster/Broomfield and Boulder typically runs 20–35 minutes. During Sundance, with extra event traffic, budget 30–45 minutes. In bad weather? Budget an hour and don't feel foolish about it.
The US-36 express lanes help during peak hours — tolled lanes that keep traffic moving when the main lanes slow down. If you're renting, the express lane transponder is worth every penny during festival week.
For pre-booked car service, the corridor is straightforward. Your driver knows the route, knows the timing, and knows where to drop you so you're not circling Boulder looking for parking that doesn't exist.
