Denver to Boulder: Routes, Timing & Transportation Options

Every way to cover the 30 miles between Denver and Boulder — and when each option makes sense.

Denver to Boulder is 30 miles, mostly highway, and takes 30-35 minutes without traffic. With traffic — which is most weekday mornings and evenings — it takes 45-70 minutes. The difference between a good trip and a frustrating one comes down to route choice, timing, and how you get there.

The Three Routes

Route 1: US-36 via I-25 (Most Common)

Take I-25 north to US-36 west (exit 217). US-36 runs directly to Boulder along the Flatiron corridor, with exits at Broomfield, Louisville, and Superior before terminating at 28th Street in Boulder.

Route 2: I-25 to Northwest Parkway to CO-7

Take I-25 north past Thornton, exit onto Northwest Parkway (toll road), then south on CO-7 into Boulder. Swings wide north but avoids the US-36 corridor entirely.

Route 3: CO-93 via Golden (Scenic)

Take I-70 west to CO-93 north through Golden and along the base of the foothills into Boulder. Beautiful drive along the hogbacks with views of the Continental Divide.

Rush Hour Reality

The Denver-Boulder corridor is one of the busiest commuter routes in Colorado.

Morning Rush (7:00-9:00 AM)

The dominant flow is Boulder to Denver (commuters heading to Denver jobs). Denver-to-Boulder is the reverse commute and typically 10-15 minutes faster.

Evening Rush (4:00-6:30 PM)

The dominant flow reverses: Denver to Boulder is the heavy direction. US-36 westbound backs up from Broomfield to I-25. Budget an extra 20-40 minutes or use the express lanes.

CU Game Days

When the Buffs play at home (Folsom Field, 50,183 capacity), Boulder-bound traffic starts building 3+ hours before kickoff. Post-game traffic is worse — expect 30-45 minutes just to exit the campus area.

Why Groups Should Skip Self-Driving

The math changes fast when you're not traveling solo:

Add parking costs ($15-$40), the stress of unfamiliar roads, and the designated-driver question, and private car service becomes the obvious choice for groups.
